Dutch Masters, Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age & Outsider Art Museum

The Hermitage in Amsterdam is presenting two new exhibitions this October. Visitors can rejoice with Dutch Masters from the Hermitage and the Outsider Art Gallery. The exhibitions are open for visitors until respectively May 27 and May 28 of 2018. The Gallery of the Golden Age is open for visitors since November 2014.

Dutch Masters from the Hermitage

The exhibition Dutch Masters reveals paintings that haven’t been present in the Netherlands for 350 years. In collaboration with the State Hermitage of St Petersburg, The Nieuwe Keizersgracht wing will host the leading collection of Dutch Golden Age paintings outside the Netherlands. An unique opportunity to witness the homecoming of 63 artworks made by 50 different artists.

Gallery of the Golden Age

Gallery of the Golden Age also focuses on the Dutch Golden Age as it presents thirty enormous group portraits gathered from the Rijksmuseum and the Amsterdam Museum. The paintings can be considered as the ‘brothers and sisters’ of the famous Dutch showpiece ‘Night Watch’ by Rembrandt van Rijn. The paintings showcase people from different walks of life. Regents, civic guards and merchants of all ranks, social classes and religions are standing together as brothers. This offers a visual insight in the pecking order of Dutch society in the 17th century. It illustrates the story of collective citizenship that formed the foundation of Dutch social structures in the 21th century.

Outsider Art Museum: New Masters

Expect unconventional works by Dutch and foreign artists in The Outsider Art Museum. Most of the artists are not formally trained and this will make visitors reconsider their perspective on art. The ‘outsiders’ often live in isolation and struggle to connect with society. Combine this with an extraordinary amount of creativity and it results in a diverse and original exhibition.  Next to the artworks in the exhibition are pictures of the artists taken by renowned photographer Sander Troelstra that will reveal the faces behind the art.
