Westfries Museum

Westfries museum

The museum is located in one of the most beautiful monuments in Hoorn. The Westfries Museum focuses on the Golden Age and shows us the richness of this time period. The museum demonstrates this by showing us 25 decorated style rooms, filled with paintings, porcelain, glass and silverware. The Westfries museum is showing their collection to share this wealth with the public, because the past offers recognition, wonder, meaning and understanding.

The museum also offers temporary exhibitions. See which ones can be seen now here.

Collection

The total collection of the museum includes 30,000 objects. These objects tell the story of the most dynamic period in Dutch history and its significance for West Friesland . The collection emphasizes the period between 1500 and 1800. This period includes the start, the bloom and the aftermath of The Golden Age.

Masterpieces from the museum are, for example, a cabinet of curiosities, a portrait of the director, the Bossu cup, the double portrait of the Sonck couple and a portrait of two archers.

In 2005, 24 paintings and approximately 70 pieces of silver were stolen from the museum. This radical event still occupies the minds of the museum’s employees. In 2016, five of the stolen paintings appeared in Ukraine. These paintings are now being restored, because the state of the paintings was quite bad.
