Jewish Historical Museum

The museum is located in four monumental synagogues in the middle of the Jewish Cultural Quarter (JCK). The museum provides a unique picture of Dutch Jewish life from the past to the present. The Jewish Historical Museum consists of several locations, the Jewish Historical Museum, JHM Children’s Museum, Portuguese Synagogue with the ancient library Ets Haim, Hollandsche Schouwburg and the National Holocaust Museum.

Collection Jewish Historical Museum

The museum has an extensive collection. The collection of the Jewish Historical Museum consists of the museum collection, historical documents and the photo collection. This collection ranges from paintings to film and from utensils to 3D presentations. The museum exhibits these collections on the galleries of the Great Synagogue. On these galleries there is a story about the history of the Jews in the Netherlands from 1600-1900 and 1900-present. On the ground floor of the Great Synagogue there is an exhibition dedicated to Jewish religion and tradition. In addition to this permanent collection, there are always one or two temporary exhibitions.

Other locations

With a ticket you can visit all other locations next to the museum itself. The JHM Children’s Museum is located in the Jewish Historical Museum itself. In this museum, the children are introduced in a playful way to Jewish life and Jewish traditions. The museum is designed as a home of a Jewish family with six rooms.

The Portuguese Synagogue is still used as a house of prayer, but the synagogue is also open to the public. In the Portuguese Synagogue there is a collection of more than 900 ceremonial objects, a collection of prints, photographs and more.

Library Ets Haim Livraria Montezinos is the oldest functioning Jewish library in the world. The library is located in the complex of the Portuguese Synagogue. The library has more than 550 manuscripts and a collection of 20,000 to 25,000 printed works.

In the National Holocaust Museum, the history of the Holocaust is told in changing exhibitions and events, about exclusion, persecution and murder, but also about salvation, survival and solidarity.

In the Hollandsche Schouwburg, a former theater, Jews were brought together by the occupying forces during the Second World War. At present, it is a monument with a name wall in memory of the Jewish victims. In the Hollandsche Schouwburg, there is also an exhibition about the persecution of the Jews.
