Drents Museum

The museum

It started as the Provincial Museum of Antiquities, with a cupboard full of archaeological and historical objects. The collection has now grown to more than 90,000 objects and is one of the largest in the Dutch museum world. In terms of size and quality, the Archeology collection is one of the most important in Northwest Europe.

Drents Museum: Collection

The Drents Museum has several collections. The collection of Drents history illustrates the image of the material culture of the ordinary man and woman in Drenthe in the period from 1750 to 1950. The collection of art originated from the period from 1885 to 1935, owned by the Drents Museum, is counted among the top five collections in this field in the Netherlands. The collection of modern realistic art is special as well. In the Netherlands, it was not customary for a museum to collect this in the past few decades. The collection of the Drents Museum regarding modern realistic art has become the most prominent in this field in our country.

Building

The Drents Museum has several special areas. The museum has been around for a long time and has therefore received several parts through refurbishment, expansion and renovation. You can still see parts of the original monastery from 1259. After the renovations, visitors now have to enter through an 18th century carriage house. Architect Eric van Egeraat chose the color white for the new building. This makes the colorful collection to be fully appreciated. There are also floating stairs weighing 16,000 kilos each and a wandering garden to showcase the historic center of Assen. The new wing of the Drents museum has been built under the ground completely.
